JCRC Condemns Lethal Terror Attack Against France’s Jewish Community

Minneapolis, MN – Steve Hunegs, executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC), issued the following statement regarding today’s lethal terrorist attack at a Jewish grocery store in Paris, which comes just two days after the terrorist attack by Islamic extremists on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo:

“Today, as French Jews were preparing for the Jewish Sabbath, we were horrified to learn that terrorists had taken hostages at a Jewish kosher supermarket as another hostage situation unfolded on the outskirts of the city.

“While there are many details which are still not known, tragically, four of the hostages were murdered at the hands of the terrorists and one of the suspected terrorists remains at large.

“Barbaric acts of terror like those seen in Paris this week affect individuals of all faiths and backgrounds, as seen by the victims of the attack at the Charlie Hebdo offices, which included Muslim, Jewish, and Christian victims.

“These terror attacks underscore an unacceptable worldwide resurgence of lethal anti-Semitism and Islamic extremism against Jews and others. It must stop. There is no place in a civil society for such brutal intimidation and violence. Not in Paris. Not in New York. Not in Boston. Not in Baghdad. Not in Mogadishu. Not in Peshawar. And not in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, or Sderot.

“We mourn with all the people of Paris for the victims of these attacks. We stand by the French Jewish community, which has been under literal siege for some time and where by some estimates as many as 74% have considered emigrating.

“We offer our prayers for peace and restoration of calm and security for the people of France, and all other victims of Islamic extremism.

“Finally, the JCRC renews our call for religious leaders and clergy of all faiths to condemn this attack, and all other acts of violent Islamic extremism, without reservation or caveat.”
