JCRC Condemns the Slur "Redskins" and Urges its Abolition as the Name of the Washington NFL Team

JCRC also notes that disparaging rhetoric about owner Dan Snyder’s Judaism is unhelpful and concerning

Minneapolis, MN – Steve Hunegs, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) issued the following statement today condemning the slur “Redskins” and urging its abolition as the name of the Washington NFL team:

"The Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) condemns the slur ‘Redskins’ and urges its abolition as the name of the Washington NFL team. This racist, disparaging, and hateful term has no place in America’s lexicon.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceled the Washington Redskins’ trademark registration stating that the term ‘Redskins’ was ‘disparaging of Native Americans.’ The JCRC echoes this sentiment.

"As Jews, who suffered through the tragedy of the Shoah with its murder of 6 million of our people, we are deeply sensitive to the pain and loss suffered by Native Americans, and other victims of genocide. However, the unfortunate rhetoric used in the protest at TCF Bank Stadium on November 2nd disparagingly citing Dan Snyder’s Judaism is unhelpful and concerning to Minnesota’s Jewish community, including those who join the JCRC in advocating for the abolition of the team’s name."
