SUMMARY:TCJFF presents My Underground Mother
DESCRIPTION:MINNESOTA PREMIERE \nFilmmaker and journalist Marisa Fox joins TCJFF in person for a remarkable investigation into the mother she thought she knew—and the history her mother spent a lifetime trying to leave behind. \nTwenty years after her mother’s death\, Fox uncovers a secret that transforms everything she understood about her family. She knew her mother as Tamar\, the fiery redheaded freedom fighter of British Mandate Palestine. But before Tamar\, there was Hela—a Polish-born Jewish teenager who survived a women’s forced labor camp in the Nazi-occupied Sudetenland. \nWhen Fox discovers traces of her mother’s story in a journal kept by the camp’s teenage prisoners\, she sets out to find the women who survived alongside her. Tracking them across continents\, she pieces together a history long buried by silence: of exploitation and trauma\, but also extraordinary courage\, resistance\, friendship\, and agency—and of the postwar shame that helped drive her mother to reinvent herself. \nBlending riveting testimony\, striking animation\, archival discovery\, and intimate vérité footage\, My Underground Mother is at once a daughter’s search for the woman hidden inside her own mother and a powerful reclamation of women’s wartime experiences too often left outside the historical record. \nThe screening will be followed by a conversation with filmmaker and journalist Marisa Fox\, whose personal story is at the heart of the film\, facilitated by Meira Besikof of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas. \nMarisa Fox has written for The New York Times\, Haaretz\, Elle\, InStyle\, O\, New York\, Newsday\, the Los Angeles Times and many other publications. \nThis film is presented in partnership with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas. SUMMARY:TCJFF presents Gen Z Onscreen: I Don’t Know What I’m Doing Here
DESCRIPTION:MINNESOTA PREMIERE \nTCJFF’s Gen Z Onscreen Night spotlights a new generation turning the camera on their own lives—using bold\, personal storytelling to wrestle with identity\, memory\, and the questions they’ve inherited. This year’s selection follows an American college student searching rural Romania for traces of her grandmother’s early life\, armed with little more than unmarked photographs and a single recording—a portrait of what it means to come of age Jewish and unmoored from your own history. \nMima\, an American college student\, sets out for the rural Romanian village where her grandmother Esther was born. Along for the journey are her friend Jacob\, a recent film-school dropout\, and an 18-year-old translator they found on Facebook. Armed with unmarked family photographs and a recorded oral history\, the unlikely trio scales walls\, crosses fields\, and searches for traces of Esther’s life before the Holocaust. But as the deeper questions behind Mima’s journey begin to surface\, the search becomes less about recovering a lost past than reckoning with what cannot be recovered. What does it mean to inherit a history you never experienced? How do you make meaning from photographs\, stories\, silences\, and places that no longer remember you? \nRaw\, funny\, searching\, and defiantly handmade\, I Don’t Know What I’m Doing Here captures the particular disorientation of being young in the 2020s—a punk-rock response to media saturation\, disconnection from the past\, and the pressure to somehow figure out what to do with the stories we’ve been given. \nThis screening will be preceded by a cocktail and mocktail hour for young adults at 6:00 PM in the bar at Emagine Willow Creek. To RSVP\, email Risa Cohen. \nThis film is presented in partnership with YALA and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas. Use promo code JCRC for 20% off tickets.

SUMMARY:TCJFF presents Documentary Shorts Block: A Higher Calling
DESCRIPTION:Three remarkable stories. Three very different lives. One question: What happens when you discover a responsibility larger than yourself? \nCall Me Papa: The Letters of Otto Frank\nMINNESOTA PREMIERE \nFrom Executive Producer Josh Gad\, this moving short documentary chronicles the remarkable post-WWII journey of Otto Frank\, the father of Anne Frank. Featuring testimony from his stepdaughter Eva Schloss\, a Holocaust survivor herself\, as well as some of the people whose lives were impacted by Anne’s words and Otto’s friendship\, the film reveals how Otto became a guiding light to thousands of young people around the globe who wrote to him\, seeking wisdom and hope. \nThis film is presented in partnership with the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas. Use promo code JCRC for 20% off tickets.  \nThe Baddest Speechwriter of All\nMINNESOTA PREMIERE \nWinner: 2026 Sundance Short Film Grand Jury Prize \nCo-directed by two-time Academy Award winner Ben Proudfoot and NBA champion Stephen Curry\, The Baddest Speechwriter of All introduces audiences to Clarence B. Jones\, Martin Luther King Jr.’s attorney\, adviser\, and speechwriter. With humor\, candor\, and hard-earned wisdom\, Jones reflects on the words he helped shape\, the coalitions he helped build\, and the personal cost of serving a movement that changed history. His story also illuminates the interracial and interfaith alliances at the heart of the Civil Rights Movement\, including the essential role Jewish activists played in the struggle for racial justice. \nThe ASSET\nMINNESOTA PREMIERE \n“When a national tragedy coupled with the dying wish of a protégé compels trauma surgeon\, Dr. Anna Goldenberg\, to bring elite trauma training to a warzone\, she embarks on a deeply personal mission that transcends bureaucracy\, borders\, and conflict.” \nTHE ASSET follows an American trauma surgeon\, Dr. Anna Goldenberg\, who answers that tragedy with a tool refined over decades in U.S. hospitals: The Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma — a cadaver-based course known simply as ASSET. She is motivated by her former protégé who is facing a battle of his own – metastatic cancer. \nBuilt around one intense day of surgical trauma training\, the film charts how a transfer of skill becomes a transfer of resolve\, across language\, borders and grief. Against enormous bureaucratic\, financial\, and personal obstacles\, Dr. Goldenberg brings Jewish\, Muslim\, Christian\, and Druze surgeons together to train side by side. As she races against time\, she discovers a deeper understanding of belonging\, responsibility\, and leading a life of service. \nRooted in the core ethos of medicine that every human life has value; the film offers an urgent and hopeful portrait of healing during a turbulent time. The ASSET is a hopeful story about mentorship\, collaboration\, and the universal commitment of healthcare professionals to save lives.
