SUMMARY:Fighting White Supremacy: From Charlottesville to Capitol Hill
DESCRIPTION:Three years ago\, white supremacists meticulously planned and carried out a violent attack on Charlottesville that resulted in dozens of injuries and the death of Heather Heyer. Fast forward three-and-a-half years: with far-right extremists even more emboldened by years of disinformation\, conspiracies\, and hate\, we witnessed an unprecedented attack on Congress by violent insurrectionists intent on disrupting our peaceful transition of power and harming our nation’s leaders. \nJoin Integrity First for America Executive Director\, Amy Spitalnick\, Lead Attorney\, Robbie Kaplan\, and moderator\, Rabbi Michael Adam Latz for a pressing and critical conversation hosted by Shir Tikvah Congregation. They’ll explore the path from Charlottesville to the Capitol; how this movement of violent white supremacists and other far-right extremists has grown; and\, most importantly\, how we bring these individuals and hate groups to account\, starting with IFA’ s landmark Charlottesville lawsuit\, Sines v. Kessler\, which takes on the leaders of this violent movement and heads to trial this year. We will be joined by Reverend Jia Starr Brown for opening remarks and Pastor DeWayne Davis for closing remarks. \nRegister\nCo-sponsored by: Kaleo Center for Faith\, Justice and Social Transformation — The Table Mpls — St. Joan of Arc Catholic Community — TC Jewfolk — First Covenant Church — Muslim American Society of Minnesota — Jewish Community Action — JCRC (Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas) — White Bear Unitarian Universalist Church\, Social Action Committee — Mount Zion Temple — Macalester Center for Religious and Spiritual Life

SUMMARY:Blood Libel: On the Trail of an Antisemitic Myth
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, the shooter at a synagogue near San Diego\, referred to Simon of Trent\, a child whose death in 1475 led to one of the most notorious anti-Jewish trials\, to justify his desire to kill. In 2020\, Italian Archbishop Ambrogio Spreafico had to issue a statement condemning a vitriolic antisemitic painting depicting the killing of Simon of Trent. While charges that Jews poisoned wells and desecrated the communion host waned over the years\, the blood libel survived. Following the paper trail across Europe\, from England to Italy to Poland\, from the twelfth to the twentieth century\, Magda Teter shows how the blood libel became rooted in European imagination and why this myth persists today. \nMagda Teter is Professor of History and Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studies at Fordham University. The author of Blood LIbel: On the Trail of an Antisemitic Myth (Harvard)\, Sinners on Trial: Jews and Sacrilege after the Reformation (Harvard)\, and Jews and Heretics in Catholic Poland (Cambridge)\, she has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim and Harry Frank Guggenheim foundations\, Harvard\, and was Mellon Foundation Fellow at the Cullman Center\, New York Public Library. In 2020-2021\, she is the NEH Senior Scholar at the Center for Jewish History. \nCosponsored by: Department of History\, Center for Austrian Studies\, Medieval Studies\, Jewish Community Relations Council: Minnesota & the Dakotas \nRegister via zoom\nProgram hosted by University of Minnesota Center for Jewish Studies\n\nCosponsored by: Department of History\, Center for Austrian Studies\, Medieval Studies\, JCRC

SUMMARY:Bridges of Cooperation: Interfaith Action Toward Racial Equity
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 10 a.m.\, Friday\, November 20\, 2020 for a virtual lecture featuring Eboo Patel.\nCollectively\, we face a moment of divisions in our society. Whether religious\, political\, racial\, generational\, economic or in other areas\, we find our communities\, institutions\, families and society fracturing. Together\, we can improve. We can build communities where sources of difference become sources of strength — where shared humanity and communal aspirations compel dialogue\, not division. \nTo help spark that dialogue\, the College of Saint Benedict welcomes Eboo Patel. Eboo Patel\, president of Interfaith Youth Core\, founded the non-profit organization on the idea that religion should be a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier or division. For over 15 years he has worked with governments\, social sector organizations\, and college and university campuses to help make interfaith cooperation a social norm. Patel served on President Obama’s Inaugural Faith Council and is the author of four books. \nInterfaith Youth Core is committed to interfaith leadership to combat racism. In this free public lecture\, Eboo Patel will share strategies for interfaith action toward racial equity. \nRegistration is not required. A livestream for this virtual lecture will be added to the event page on the College of St. Benedict website on the day of the event.  \n\nPart of The Democracy Project\, funded by the Otto Bremer Trust and the Oren and Sharron Steinfeldt Foundation. Events offered in partnership with the College of St. Benedict and Concordia College of Moorhead\, Minnesota. \nWith additional support from the Minnesota Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations\, Jay Phillips Center for Interfaith Learning at Saint John’s University\, CentraCare\, CSB/SJU Becoming Community\, Granite Equity Partners\, Bernick’s\, Greater St. Cloud Development Corporation\, Initiative Foundation\, and #UNITECLOUD.

SUMMARY:Total Devastation: The forgotten mass destruction of Jewish homes during Kristallnacht 1938
DESCRIPTION:The November pogrom is known by Holocaust scholars as one of the most analyzed events in Nazi Germany. Descriptions of Kristallnacht usually emphasize the attacks on synagogues and Jewish shops\, sometimes schools and other Jewish institutions\, yet rarely the destructions of private homes. Based on contemporary administrative reports and letters as well as postwar survivor testimonies\, research suggests that during that night Goebbels ordered systematic and nationwide violent attacks aimed at Jewish homes. The resulting mass destruction of Jewish homes and apartments has never been studied\, neither in its scale and intensity nor its brutality and impact. For some cities\, between 75 and 90 per cent of the Jewish homes had been reported as vandalized. After the attacks\, thousands of homes were left inhabitable\, their windows broken and china\, furniture\, lamps and paintings smashed to pieces. Humiliations\, beatings\, murder and sexual violence accompanied the systematic destruction. More than burned synagogues or vandalized shops\, indeed the systematic devastation of the last refuge of the German Jews — their homes — might explain\, why so many German and Austrian Jews decided to flee or to commit suicide after Kristallnacht. \nClick here to register via Zoom\nWolf Gruner (gruner@usc.edu) holds the Shapell-Guerin Chair in Jewish Studies\, is Professor of History at the University of Southern California\, Los Angeles since 2008 and is the Founding Director of the USC Shoah Foundation Center for Advanced Genocide Research since 2014. He is a specialist in the history of the Holocaust and in comparative genocide studies. He received his PhD in History in 1994 from the Technical University Berlin as well as his Habilitation in 2006. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University\, Yad Vashem Jerusalem\, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum\, Women’s Christian University Tokyo\, and the Center for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg\, as well as the Desmond E. SUMMARY:Commemorating the Tree of Life Tragedy with Dr. Beth Kissileff
DESCRIPTION:On October 27\, 2018\, three congregations were holding their morning Shabbat services at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood when a lone gunman entered the building and opened fire. He killed eleven people and injured six more in the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in American history. The story made international headlines for weeks following the shooting\, but Pittsburgh and the local Jewish community could not simply move on when the news cycle did. \n\n\n\n\nThe essays in this anthology\, written by local journalists\, academics\, spiritual leaders\, and other community members\, reveal a city’s attempts to come to terms with an unfathomable horror. \nJoin us via Zoom as Dr. Kissilef discusses this soon-to-be-published anthology. \nPlease contact lrappaport@bethelsynagogue.org for Zoom information for this event

SUMMARY:Virtual Twin Cities Jewish Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The JCRC is proud to sponsor two films at the Virtual Twin Cities Jewish Film Festival: The Tattooed Torah and Sister/Stranger. \nPlease visit the Film Festival website for more information. \nThe Tattooed Torah is an animated short film\, adapted from the beloved children’s book by Marvell Ginsburg that has been a powerful resource for Holocaust education for children. \nSister/Stranger: Two women\, one Muslim and one Jewish\, dare to believe they can join hands to stop hate. They ask women across the U.S. to overcome a history of distrust and go from strangers to sisters\, and unite against the rising tide of hate in America.
