SUMMARY:Understanding Extremism and Youth Radicalization
DESCRIPTION:In ADL’s 2021 gaming survey\, over 10% of young people ages 13–17 reported being exposed to white supremacist ideologies in online multiplayer games. Research tells us that this is only the tip of the iceberg\, and that white supremacist propaganda and ideas are showing up in homes and in schools in increasingly alarming ways. \nThis webinar will provide a framework for understanding white supremacist trends across the nation with an emphasis on youth radicalization in K-12 schools and communities. Participants will learn how white supremacists target and appeal to young people\, how they utilize online spaces\, including gaming sites\, what makes young people vulnerable to recruitment\, and what the various stages of radicalization may look like among youth populations. Experts will provide strategies for talking about extremist propaganda and recruitment with young people\, families\, colleagues\, and law enforcement\, and will share best practices for engaging with youth in the wake of extremist incidents. \nThe webinar will particularly benefit adults who are seeking to address the rise of bias and hate incidents in Minnesota\, North Dakota\, and South Dakota’s K-12 schools and communities. DESCRIPTION:JCRC is partnering with Pioneer PBS and the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum to host a special advance screening of THE U.S. AND THE HOLOCAUST — a new PBS series directed and produced by Ken Burns\, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein.  The hybrid event will be held on Thursday\, September 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum Bomber Hangar’s Voices of Valor Theater and the Quonset Briefing Room where excerpts from the forthcoming three-part\, six-hour series will be shown.  The event will also be accessible as a Zoom webinar. DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Sam Mihara\nSam Mihara is a second-generation Japanese American. His parents were born in Japan and immigrated to the U.S. in the 1920’s. Sam was born in the early 1930’s and raised in San Francisco. When World War II broke out\, the United States government forced Sam and his family to move\, first to a detention camp in Pomona\, California and then to a remote prison camp in Northern Wyoming\, where they stayed for three years. The camp was one of 10 in the United States. SUMMARY:Blood Libel: On the Trail of an Antisemitic Myth
DESCRIPTION:In 2018\, the shooter at a synagogue near San Diego\, referred to Simon of Trent\, a child whose death in 1475 led to one of the most notorious anti-Jewish trials\, to justify his desire to kill. In 2020\, Italian Archbishop Ambrogio Spreafico had to issue a statement condemning a vitriolic antisemitic painting depicting the killing of Simon of Trent. While charges that Jews poisoned wells and desecrated the communion host waned over the years\, the blood libel survived. Following the paper trail across Europe\, from England to Italy to Poland\, from the twelfth to the twentieth century\, Magda Teter shows how the blood libel became rooted in European imagination and why this myth persists today. \nMagda Teter is Professor of History and Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studies at Fordham University. The author of Blood LIbel: On the Trail of an Antisemitic Myth (Harvard)\, Sinners on Trial: Jews and Sacrilege after the Reformation (Harvard)\, and Jews and Heretics in Catholic Poland (Cambridge)\, she has received fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim and Harry Frank Guggenheim foundations\, Harvard\, and was Mellon Foundation Fellow at the Cullman Center\, New York Public Library. SUMMARY:Bridges of Cooperation: Interfaith Action Toward Racial Equity
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 10 a.m.\, Friday\, November 20\, 2020 for a virtual lecture featuring Eboo Patel.\nCollectively\, we face a moment of divisions in our society. Whether religious\, political\, racial\, generational\, economic or in other areas\, we find our communities\, institutions\, families and society fracturing. Together\, we can improve. We can build communities where sources of difference become sources of strength — where shared humanity and communal aspirations compel dialogue\, not division. \nTo help spark that dialogue\, the College of Saint Benedict welcomes Eboo Patel. Eboo Patel\, president of Interfaith Youth Core\, founded the non-profit organization on the idea that religion should be a bridge of cooperation rather than a barrier or division. For over 15 years he has worked with governments\, social sector organizations\, and college and university campuses to help make interfaith cooperation a social norm. Patel served on President Obama’s Inaugural Faith Council and is the author of four books. \nInterfaith Youth Core is committed to interfaith leadership to combat racism. In this free public lecture\, Eboo Patel will share strategies for interfaith action toward racial equity. \nRegistration is not required.
