Federation Statement Following Attack at Islamic Center of San Diego
May 18, 2026
Jewish Federation of San Diego is heartbroken by the devastating attack today at Islamic Center of San Diego.
According to the latest confirmed information provided by San Diego Police Department, three adult victims were killed in the attack, including a security guard. Law enforcement has also confirmed that both suspects are deceased and that there is no further threat to the community at this time. No children were injured in the incident.
At this time, SDPD and the FBI are investigating this attack as a possible hate crime until that determination can be ruled out.
Violence against any house of worship is intolerable. Every person deserves to gather in prayer, community, and peace without fear for their safety. This awful and horrifying act of violence has shaken communities across San Diego and struck at the core of our shared humanity and values.
We are grateful to the law enforcement officers, first responders, security personnel, and civic leaders who responded swiftly and courageously throughout the day. The City of San Diego has also confirmed that there will be increased patrols and security presence at religious institutions across San Diego in the coming days.
Federation remains in close communication with local law enforcement, security partners, and interfaith leaders. We stand with the Islamic Center of San Diego and against this act of violence and hatred of all kinds.
Our prayers are with San Diego’s Muslim community as they grieve, heal, and navigate the difficult days ahead. May the memories of those lost be a blessing, and may all those impacted find comfort, healing, and strength.
Statement from Temple Israel on the fatal shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego
May 18, 2026
Dear Temple Family,
We are devastated to hear that there was a fatal shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. The campus houses not just a gathering center, but also a school. The images coming from San Diego are all too familiar to us.
As we speak, Rabbi Jen Lader is in Washington D.C. with our Federation partners lobbying for a $1B to be allocated for the protection of ALL houses of worship. To anyone who feels this is excessive, what happened to Temple Israel two months ago, and now, the Islamic Center of San Diego, proves that it is not optional funding. Every dollar will be necessary to protect houses of worship all over the country.
We know that the images on the news may be difficult for our community to see. Please know we are available to listen and to help, as is the incredible team from JFS.
May God comfort the Muslim community of San Diego and beyond, and all communities of worship that pray for wholeness and peace.
